It’s been over a decade since the British racing giants made history with the fastest production car ever made (at the time), their iconic F1. Only 106 of the hyper cars were made but Chairman Ron Dennis has made a striking statement “Since 1966, when McLaren first raced in F1, 106 teams have come and gone – and that tells me that if we stay solely as an F1 team it will lead to extinction.” Their latest creation, the MP4-12C is said to be an attempt to avoid the fate that has cursed many of their fellow F1 brothers, by becoming a fully fledged road car manufacturer.

Dennis claims the company will build over 1,200 of the cars in the first year alone, producing around the same amount of cars as the companies it will be competing with. It will cost around 150,000 which is standard supercar money and there have been 1,600 pre-orders already.

The car is set to be released in 2011 but the plant it will be produced in is yet to be constructed, but when it is it will create 300 new jobs. The car was revealed at a press conference in the company’s futuristic headquarters in Woking, it was uncovered by its first two test drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

“The 12C won’t take you to the edge of what’s possible; it will take you to the edge of the edge. It’s what we call an ‘and’ car. It’s powerful and efficient; lightweight and safe; fast and comfortable” Explained Antony Sheriff, Managing Director. Its lightweight construction will be built around a revolutionary Carbon Monocell which is astoundingly strong and will be capable of reaching 60mph in “under three seconds”.

Although there is no doubt of the supercar status of the MP4, it is unlikely it will cause as much of a fuss as the F1. The bigger question is whether the success of this car and this brand will fade along with their exclusivity? Will every millionaire want one if they know the wont own the only one on the roads? It’s a question that only time will answer but one that could determine the future of this Formula racing giant.

The new McLaren is bound to cause a few driving bans as many of the owners of the previous F1 were convicted of driving offence solicitor within months of receiving the car.

Recent research has discovered some startling facts surrounding the age old debate of who is most likely to crash the family car, Mum or Dad? Research undertaken by the insurance company, Diamond, divers some interesting facts to throw into the debate.

Men are also more likely than women to drive through floods or suffer a vehicle fire, according to the study which looked at five years of accidents.

Female motorists are more likely to put in claims for collisions on roundabouts and hitting cars from behind, a study of more than two million accidents by insurance company Diamond found.

As well as having head-on collisions, men are more likely to hit crash barriers and trees or drive up and down embankments. Cars belonging to men are also more likely to catch fire, even though one hypothesis with this is the over use of high power-driven electronic goods use to ‘upgrade’ a cars stereo and speaker equipment.

Women suffer more than men from having their car broken into and having something taken from inside, while men are more likely to have their car stolen outright.

Diamond’s managing director Sian Lewis said: “Women tend to be in more accidents at slower speeds where cars are close together, while men have more high-speed accidents where it is easy to lose control.

“Our research suggests the way men and women drive is different. Possibly men drive faster and more aggressively than women, while women are more easily distracted than men behind the wheel of a car.”

She went on: “It’s very strange that men’s cars are more likely to catch fire than women’s. “I can’t explain why that would happen. But one reason why women are more likely to have their car broken into is perhaps because they’re more likely to leave expensive items, like their handbag or sunglasses, on show than men.

Speeding is by far the most dangerous road activity drivers can embark on. People on the roads who speed constantly and a so called ‘boy racer’ culture have meant that speeding has become a bigger problem over the years. It is a proven fact that the time difference of a journey taken obeying the speed limit compared to one breaking the speed limit is not only safer but it also only means arriving a minute or two later- so there really is no point to speeding.

Being overtaken by bad drivers is another dangerous offence. People who overtake and then run out of space to fit back into their side of the road can create problems and accidents involving those around them.

Other common and annoying habits on the road include not dipping your headlights at the right time- or worse of all not dipping them at all. This can dazzle oncoming drivers and cause accidents.

Using fog lights when the condition on the roads is poor is acceptable but using them when conditions are good is illegal. On average fog lights reach brightness that is ten times more than standard lights.

One consistently annoying habit is tailgating. Driving too close to the car in front of you can result in accidents and intimidation and distraction of other drivers.

It is important to stay disciplines where lanes are concerned. The general rule is that unless you are overtaking you should remain in the left hand lane. Hogging lanes is a bad habit and annoying to other drivers.

Flitting from lane to lane in slow moving traffic is very irritating to other drivers as well as being a pointless exercise in itself. Traffic is annoying but even so it is best to avoid behaviour like this.

Intimidating cyclists and pedestrians is another act that lots of drivers often fall into. When driving a person should show respect for those around them at all times.

If you commit a driving offence you will need to contact an experienced driving offence solicitor.

If you have ever been driving and caught by a speed camera or other speed trap you will possibly have been confused as to what to do next. The law involving motoring can seem very complicated and speeding fines, penalties and tickets and different types of speed cameras can all add to the confusion.

There are several different types of speed cameras around, some are fixed and some are in-vehicle, if you are caught by one of these cameras it is possible that there may be no film in it and you will have a lucky escape although this is not always the case.

If you have been charged with a speeding offence you will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) within fourteen days of when you committed the offence. You will need to fill in the forms within twenty eight days and provide the identity of the person driving at the time. It is a requirement by law that you identify the driver. If you cannot identify the driver you may receive the points. If you work for a company with a fleet of cars you are required to keep a record of who was driving each vehicle at the time.

Summons and fixed penalty notices are received frequently by drivers. If you do not argue against them you will usually have to pay 60 and accumulate 3 points on your licence. If, however, you decide to contest it you will see your case going to court. Often you will be offered a ‘speed awareness course,’ rather than receiving penalty points, courses like this are intended to educate you as a driver.

Often people are interested to learn what is accepted as a defence to speeding. The best way to avoid a fine or penalty points is to not speed in the first place. Speeding is a road traffic offence and looked upon as being very serious indeed by the law.

If you are the vicitm of a road traffic accident Liverpool you may be eligible to claim compensation using solicitors Liverpool EAD.

The Road Safety Foundation names Britain’s most dangerous road in a damning report which concludes one in ten motorways and A roads present an ‘unacceptably high risk to users’. The June study revealed that once again, Britain’s most-dangerous road has been named as the Cat and Fiddle Pass section of the A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton in Cheshire.

This segment of the single carriageway was the spot for 21 fatal and severe injuries in 2008. The study, which looked at approximately 28,000 miles of British motorways and A-roads, was created in a bid to persuade the government to focus expenditure on improving road safety measures. The RSF argue that the high costs of running hospitals and emergency services could be reduced by spending more modest sums on improving well-known accident blackspots.

To combat the incidents on the Cat and Fiddle section, over 5000, 000 has been spent so far on road safety improvements and observation including installing high-friction surfacing, barriers and signs, widening the carriageway, using mobile speed cameras, reducing the speed limit and the use of unmarked police cars and a police aircraft all with the sole aim of enforcing the speed limit in this notorious section of the road.

The report found that a third of all fatal and serious crashes occur at junctions, while one in four crashes involve a motorbike. Furthermore, serious road accidents are six times more likely to occur on single roads than on motorways, and carry double the risk of dual carriageways.

Road Safety Foundation director Dr Joanne Hill said: ‘This year’s report shows that not only can Britain reduce roads deaths and serious injuries but that, by targeting a relatively small mileage of high-risk roads, we can do so with good economic returns

If you’re a UK motorist then you are undoubtedly aware of the multitude of road laws and offences that you can be stopped for. However are you aware of what you are being charged with and why when you are stopped for these offences? We have put together a short list of the most common traffic offences, shedding light on the details and penalties you can expect for some of the more common driving offences.

Speeding or exceeding the speed limit: The offence here is clearly defined as ‘Driving on a road exceeding the prescribed speed limit’. For this type of motoring offence you can expect a 60 fine up to a maximum of 1000 and an endorsement of 3-6 points on your licence, and a discretionary disqualification also applies. If you are driving at more than 30 miles an hour over the speed limit then you are likely to be disqualified.

If caught speeding and you are offered a fixed penalty, usually 60, then you are almost certainly best off simply paying the fine and accepting the points as any court appearance will most likely result in a larger fine or even a ban. If you do decide to challenge a speeding fine, then potential reasons to do so include: You were simply not speeding, it wasn’t you driving or that you were driving an exempt vehicle due to emergency.

Failing to stop: This crime is clear; ‘A driver of a mechanically propelled means of transport in attendance when a road traffic accident occurred where personal injury or damage was caused to another person and or vehicle’. Further to this, if you also fail to stop after injuring an animal not in the vehicle or properties on or near the road and fail to stop then you break the above law. Penalties for this type of offence are strict, with at least 6 months in jail and a fine of a 5000 likely.

Motorway speeding: if you are caught exceeding the national speed limit in the UK on a motorway then the maximum penalty is a fine of 2500 and six driving licence points. If you a caught in excess of 100mph then the probably outcome is a ban coupled with the fine.

A ban from driving can sometimes mean a permanent ban, but depending on the severity of your crime or crimes a disqualification can range from a one year ban to ten years off the road.

There is also something called a Short Period Disqualification (SPD ) which means you are banned from driving for less than 56 days, during which time the court will have custody of your driving license, but it will not be surrendered. This penalty is usually given for less severe offences, and you can start driving once it has expired, without taking your test again

When a full license disqualification has been given and completed, you are able to apply for a license again, using forms available at the post office and online. If you do this you will be issued with a provisional licence and then need take the theory, hazard and practical tests in order to regain a full licence.

Even once you are back to having a full licence, the endorsements (points) which you were given will still remain on your license, unless a magistrate advises you otherwise and you are requested in court to make your case for removal.

In some cases of extended bans, you may not be banned for the whole period, as the court sometimes allow a driver to serve half their disqualification if they have taken steps to ensure that after the disqualification period they can be a safer driver, such as a drink driving rehabilitation course. A ban may also be reduced if the court take into account the motorists personal circumstances and deem that the impact of the ban would be detrimental to the motorists family life or job.

For bans longer than 2 years you can apply after half the proposed disqualification period, for example for a ban of 6 years you can apply after 3. If you made other offences, driving or otherwise, since your disqualification the court will immediately dismiss your application. If you are caught driving whilst banned you will face a custodial sentence and a hefty fine.

A specialist driving offence lawyer can help if you find yourself facing a ban after a drink driving offence.

The claims process for road traffic accidents compensation has recently changed, with low value compensation claims coming under a new process which will speed up the claims process. The new process will only apply to those cases which have an estimated compensation payout of between a thousand and ten thousand pounds and the biggest change to the process is how you register your wish to claim.

Under the old ruling, a potential claimant had to send a letter of claim to their insurer, who then had a 21 day period in which to acknowledge the intent to claim. Following this, they then had a 3 month period where they could perform their own investigations to allow them to decide their liability, which was often a frustrating wait for claimants.

However, since the new ruling, rather than sending a letter, potential claimants will use a secire online portal to submit an online Claims Notification Form, thus notifying the insurer of their attempt to claim. Once the insurer has been notified they then have just 15 days to respond with their liability decision, which they will also submit online.

The new Claims Notification Form requires more detail than a claim letter would so a claimant may be delayed while they gather the correct information, but this would have been required at latter stages during the old claims process, and once the claim is lodge they have much less time to wait for a decision so the process should be much quicker.

The other big difference is the fact that it is the claimant who makes the initial offer of settlement, based on their medical evidence and financial losses, rather than the insurer making an opening offer, and whilst this may seem unfavourable to some claimants it will almost certainly speed up the process.

The final change to the process is related to claims which would usually go to court. If the insurer has admitted liability but they and the claimant are unable to come to an amicable decision regarding the settlement figure, then rather than going to Court, they will support all relevant documentation to the court, who will then make a decision based on this information

As the process is still relatively new it is difficult to make a judgement on its success, and of course not every case will go through the entire process as if liability is not admitted or their are other issues then the usual procedure will stand.

Comon cases after an RTA include whiplash, head and neck injury claims, but a qualified solicitor can advice you on any type of compensation injury claim.

Careless driving is a relatively common offence , and is said to have been committed if the motorist's driving has fallen below the standard shown by a reasonably competent driver.

Careless driving is a relatively common offence , and is said to have been committed if the motorist’s driving has fallen below the standard shown by a reasonably competent driver.

Careless driving is considered as a slightly grey area of motoring law, as deciding what is considered as careless can often be quite objective. A motorist is deemed as driving carelessly both in cases where the driver is deliberately acting irresponsibly or if the carelessness comes from lack of knowledge or experience.

As ascertaining carelessness is not entirely dependent on fact, the route the prosecution must take is to proof that the incident or collision would not have happened if the motorist or motorists had been driving safely and responsibly. If a traffic incident has occurred and no illness, defect to the vehicle or other clear reason for the accident can be held responsible, then in many cases the obvious verdict will be careless driving.

Careless driving examples could be actions such as overtaking on the inside, driving very close to another road user, and failing to stop at a red light, but over the years there have been plenty more. Also, activities such as using a phone, eating or tuning a radio whilst driving may also constitute careless driving.

If you are convicted of careless driving, then the penalty could be a small fine or something much more serious, such as disqualification. Which you receive is dependent on the severity of your carelessness, but the maximum penalties are a 2500 fine, 9 penalty points and a discretionary disqualification.

If you receive a summons for careless driving, then the best thing to do is enlist the help of a professional driving offence solicitor, who will then be able to advise you on next steps and if the case goes to court give you an indication of how to plead and be able to make the best case for you.

The ‘most lucrative’ speed camera in Britain has been named and shamed. Not surprisingly, the local community is outraged by the findings of this camera. It has been discovered that the speed camera, erected on a road where few incidents take place, has netted the local council 1.3m pound per year.

The notorious speed camera which has unofficially been labelled the most lucrative in Britain, on average catches over 1,800 motorists each month. The cost of a speeding ticket stands at a whopping 60, so this one camera has netted over 1,327,140 each year of its life.

The camera can be found in Poole, Dorset where it was erected to catch motorists jumping red lights on a 30mph stretch of road on a dual carriageway. However, back in November last year the camera became one of the first in the country to be converted to catch unaware motorists speeding through the lights when they were on Green.

The camera was converted even though official stats showed there had been only one serious injury and no fatalities in at least 11 years. Motoring groups feared the camera was converted to in a move to ‘milk the motorist’ as the speed limit is also said to be to low for a dual carriageway.

The resulting low speed, the cameras position and the fact it has been converted to ‘catch all’ has led to such high volumes of issued tickets. The stretch of road the camera is on is a wide dual carriageway, with a harbour on one side and an industrial estate on the other with no residential home nearby. The income this camera is generating is well above normal, signifying something is seriously wrong.

A temporary Camera at road works on the A1139 in Peterborough earlier this year was, on average issuing 3000 tickets per month, generating 3.2m per year.
